1) What are the sizes of files that each disc option can hold?
DVD-5 = 4.70GB DVD-10 = 9.40 GB CD-ROM = 650 - 700 MB
DVD-9 = 8.54 GB DVD-18 = 17.08 GB
2) What is the difference between replication and duplication?
Duplication is the copying or "burning" of disc media, while
replication is the creation of new disc using a stamper to imprint information
onto each new disc.
2A) What is a stamper?
A stamper is a glass plate that has information from the original master
eched into it. It is then used to physically stamp the same info into
each disc.
2B) What are check discs and why is there a charge for them?
There are two types of chech discs, print and data, used to verify the
job is
being done to the customer's specs. The charge for the print comes form
the
machine setup and films being created and the data disc cost derives
from the machine setup as well as the stamper creation.
3) What is the difference between silkscreen and offset printing on
discs?
Silkscreen is your standard printing option which uses screens that
the ink passes through onto the disc. Offset printing uses films and
plates for consistent printing. Mostly reserved
for discs using pictures as face art or high quantity runs.
3A) When should I choose one over the other?
Offset is used most often when the face art uses a picture of someone
and also when there are high quantity runs. Silkscreen is the most common
and is used on most jobs.
3B) Why does a white base coat count as one color?
Most replicators still have to create a film for the white ink to pass
through
3C) What is a film charge and why do I pay for it?
A film is a process specific photograph of the client artwork used to
produce
screens or plates
4) What is a Dual Combo CD/DVD?
A Dual Combo disc has DVD replicated on one side of the disc with quality
5.1 audio and side two is CD audio of the DVD side. This is more of
a "boutique" or "novelty" item.
4A) What are the advantages and disadvantages?
An advantage of this product would be how new of an idea it is and marketing
ability, while disadvantages include higher cost due to scarcity, ability
to print only on inner hub and the turntime.
5) How do I send the art file and/or data I want on the disc?
For DVD-5 and DVD-10 you can use either a DVD-R or a DLT (Digital Linear
Tape), DVD-9 requires a DLT format only.
5A) What is inner hub text?
Inner hub text is the writing on a disc from the center hole to the
area where the mirror band begins
6) What is the average lead/turn time?
The average lead time for a replicated CD ranges from 6-9 Days depending
on quantity. The average lead time for a replicated DVD ranges from
8-11 Days depending on quantity.
7) What is overage?
Overage is the amount of discs that a replication machine would make
above and beyond the required order. The replication machines are not
designed to stop immediately, so there is usually excess at the end
of the run.
7A) Why should I account for some?
It is always positive to have a few extra CDs/DVDs made in case there
are anyissues in transit or once the packaging actually begins.
8) What is a rush fee?
A rush fee is applied to those jobs that must be received before the
standard turntime. The amounts vary depending on the amount of days
it is needed by.
9) What is an IPR form?
IPR standands for intellectual property rights, and is required of our
customers before we start replication jobs and some print/packaging
jobs.
10) What is the usual lead/turn time?
The replication lead time is around the 7-12 day range depending on
whether it is CD or DVD and the quantity involved.
